Purmerend

Discover ‘the back garden of Amsterdam’ Laag Holland. Laag Holland is a unique piece of real Holland just north of Amsterdam. Here you will find rustic villages; Purmerend, Edam-Volendam and the regions Waterland and Beemster with picturesque streets in wide fields or hidden behind the dikes.

Purmerend – The attractive city centre tells a lot about the rich history of Purmerend. In 1484, Purmerend was the only place in the region to be given market rights and each square had its own market destination: Cheese Market, Sheep Market, Fish Market and Cow Market. Today you can enjoy the local markets, city walks, nature cycling and a trendy place to have a drink or pleasant evening out on the Koemarkt square.

Beemster - Today Beemster is best known for its UNESCO World Heritage status and its world-famous Beemster Cheese. Do you have a taste for cheese? Learn how Beemster Cheese is made and try it for yourself in the Beemster Cheese factory.
